the Frugal Mummy Smart Tip - Unit Price

The unit price tells you the cost per liter, per kilogram, per pound, etc, of what you want to buy.
Just divide the cost by the quantity:
Example: 2 liters for $3.80 is $3.80/2 liters = $1.90 per liter

Pay attention to the unit price on a product and you'll end up saving money. Often you can find the unit price on the price label that's found below the product in the store. But sometimes when a product is on sale you won't be able to find it, then you have to do some quick calculations to figure out if it's a good deal.

Example One: Sunlight Laundry Detergent

Store A selling detergent: $12.97 for 5.08 Liters
Store B selling detergent: $3.99 for 1.74 Liters
which store is cheaper?

Do the calculations...
$12.97 divided by 5.08L = $2.55/Liter
$3.99 divided by 1.74L = $2.29/Liter
Store B is cheaper!!

Example Two:
Pampers Baby Wipes
Store A $11.43 for 540 wipes
Store B $5.97 for 216 wipes
which store has better deal?

$11.43 divided by 540 = 0.021
$5.97 divided by 216 = 0.028
Store A is cheaper!

It may not seem like much of a difference. But depending on the product and different examples there can be a greater difference at times. You'll end up saving a lot of money in the long run if you pay attention to the product's unit price.
